Feedback on experience 2: Wildlife structures and monitoring on the VINCI Autoroutes network

This document presents an assessment of the fauna monitoring carried out on all the structures built since 2009 (more than 180 structures). In collaboration with the Centre d'Écologie Fonctionnelle et Évolutive UMR 5175 (CEFE) in Montpellier, a new scientific partner, a statistical analysis was carried out on a large and innovative database. This analysis has made it possible to examine in greater depth questions such as the influence of parameters linked to the structures and their environment on their use by wildlife, and to provide answers on new subjects, in particular the effectiveness of these structures. The document offers practical recommendations, advice on the use of assessment techniques and protocols, and suggestions for improvement, based on 10 years of wildlife monitoring carried out on a large number of structures.

The document is accompanied by 3 specific case studies:

• Specific feedback on experience: assessment of frequentation by small mammals of a footway under a hydraulic structure fitted with a hollow section 
• Specific feedback on experience: Monitoring of experimental structures for bats
• Specific feedback on experience: Use of technology in the framework of assessing fish passage to provide the knowledge required for restoring ecological continuity in rivers
